Red Bull: Mercedes getting a taste of their own medicine

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner reckons Mercedes are currently experiencing a taste of their own medicine, as they are, for the moment, running second-best in terms of car and engine quality to a resurgent Ferrari outfit.

The Scuderia have been the best team on the grid since the winter break, winning three races in a row in Spa, Monza, and Singapore, with Charles Leclerc winning the first two and Sebastian Vettel enjoying his first victory in a year at the weekend.

Mercedes have largely had things their own way in recent years, winning the past five constructors’ championships, and even though they are still leading the rankings in 2019, Horner believes there could be some worried faces in their team currently.

"It’s extremely impressive, they are the benchmark in the engine department in Formula 1 at the moment," the Red Bull boss said of Ferrari’s pace.

"Mercedes were there for four-and-a-half years and suddenly, they’ve got a dose of our medicine, looking at the speed traces going ballistic.

"Hats off to the Ferrari guys, they’ve found a way of extracting that horsepower and it’s up to the rest of the competition to narrow that gap."

Horner doesn’t think Ferrari have found a “silver bullet” to suddenly give them such a drastic increase in performance, but that it comes from a variety of factors.

"They are pushing the boundaries and you have to think some of it is coming from the electrical power, the combustion I think they’ve got some pretty juicy fuels that they’re running as well.

"It’s probably a combination. These things are never usually a silver bullet, it’s probably a combination of factors,"
