More to Gasly's situation than bad performance, says former driver

Former Grand Prix driver Mika Salo believes that there is something going on at Red Bull outwith the simple bad performances of Gasly, as if it was only the latter then the Frenchman would already have been dropped.

At the end of the 2018 F1 season, Gasly was fast-tracked to Red Bull from junior team Toro Rosso after the surprise departure of Daniel Ricciardo to Renault.

However, he is yet to get to grips with the new team, and is the only driver within the top three teams yet to claim a podium position this season, as he languishes down in sixth in the driver’s championship rankings.

Salo reckons there is an additional reason as to why he has been so uncompetitive than his own individual ability.

Red Bull Racing normally reacts very quickly to such things. If someone doesn’t do well, they’re put in front of the door,” the former Ferrari driver suggested.

“I think Red Bull knows more than we do. I’m sure that within the team they understand exactly what Gasly’s problem is and that’s why he’s still there. He has never been a slow driver in his career before”

Gasly is sixth in the rankings, but is 62 points adrift of Charles Leclerc in fifth.
