Mercedes started the French Grand Prix on the front foot as Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas at the top of the timesheets, as Sebastian Vettel came home a second adrift for Ferrari after a session which saw the German struggle somewhat.
Many drivers found tyre issues around the blistering Circuit Paul Ricard, with temperatures set to climb higher over the weekend, perhaps giving teams a headache for the race.
Hamilton and Bottas found little trouble, however, and were in a little league of their own, the championship leader seven hundredths quicker than his Finnish team-mate.
Romain Grosjean had his progress halted by a water leak, while Nicholas Latifi ran quicker than Robert Kubica in his second consecutive FP1 outing for Williams.
