McLaren expect Key influence on 2019 car

McLaren CEO Zak Brown is confident that James Key will arrive as technical director in time to have an influence on the team's 2019 car. McLaren announced a deal for Toro Rosso's key in July, but have been unable to extricate him from the Red Bull stable as yet.

Red Bull's demands in order to free Key early were reportedly wide-ranging. It was suggested that large sums of compensation and even a move for Lando Norris to Toro Rosso were among them.

McLaren refused to meet their terms, meaning Key will likely arrive at the team next year after a spell of gardening leave – a measure teams routinely put in place to prevent secrets being leaked.

Although the former Jordan and Sauber engineer has had no input into the 2019 car as yet, Brown is confident he can have a say in its development before putting full focus into its 2020 successor.

"We are in active discussions and I would characterise those discussions towards the end of coming to a positive conclusion for all parties," Brown said.

"I anticipate, as I've said before, [he will join] in sufficient time next year to help influence the progress of next year's car and ultimately the development of 2020.

"I will share that news as soon as we have news, but I would anticipate being able to share something early in the new year."
