Williams confirm Head return in bid to solve woes

Williams have confirmed that co-founder Sir Patrick Head has returned to the team in a consultancy role in a bid to try to inspire a turnaround in their fortunes. Head was technical director at Williams for 27 years from the team's 1977 inception, overseeing the creation of cars that secured several titles.

Nine constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles were secured by Head-designed cars in Williams' successful run in the 1980s and 1990s.

Williams modern fortunes are in stark contrast to those glory days, and the team endured arguably their worst campaign in F1 last year as they finished bottom of the constructors' standings.

They have begun 2019 in seemingly worse form – failing to get their car ready for the start of pre-season testing an running several seconds off the pace in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Technical director Paddy Lowe was placed on gardening leave between pre-season and the first race, leaving a sizable gap in Williams' leadership.

And it appears that, in the short-term at least, Head will fill the void, adding a legendary presence to Williams' decision-making for the time being.

Formula1.com quoted a Williams statement: "We can confirm that Sir Patrick Head is currently offering some support to our engineering team on a short-term consultancy basis."
